The Methodological Support Office was designed as a service center and research unit. Its main task is to offer methodological and statistical advice to the cooperation partners of different projects (a total of 25 projects in both funding cycles) in the research network. We offer individual methodological counseling at all stages of a research project. We also provide advanced methodological training workshops and continuous support to research scholars, graduate (Diplom) and PhD students. Methodological counseling is also offered to cooperation partners (ca. 150 rehabilitation institutions) in the research network. Data collected by the project groups in the research network are used for meta-analyses.

1) Communication, cooperation and organization:

The main organizational task of the Methodological Support Office consists of maintaining and expanding communication structures for the research network. Keeping close contact with project coordinators and facilitating exchange between them is a primary goal.

The cooperation with methodological support centers of other research networks the working group "methods" or "data collection across research networks" are well established. The methodological support office is also conducting a separate research project, a meta-analysis of IRES data obtained by all German rehabilitation research networks. Dr. Markus Wirtz is speaker of the working group "methods" and coordinates meetings of the group and the workshop at the conference of rehabilitation sciences in Düsseldorf.

Another task consists of maintaining and expanding the internet communication within the research network and the research funding program. This includes the design and maintenance of homepages (www.fr.reha-verbund.de, www.reha-verbund.de) and various mailing lists.

2) Methodological services for research projects:

Methodological advice for cooperation partners accounts for a large part of the services. For the routine appraisal of progress reports of the projects a standardized framework is used. Site-visits for all projects and regular phone contacts guarantee equal methodological support.

The Methodological Support Office is working on a refinancing concept including methodological training workshops and contracts for methodological support with institutions outside the research network. The curriculum of the training workshops has been expanded from six workshop days in 2002 to 13 workshop days in 2003 and planned 13 workshop days in 2004. Several contracts for methodological support from external institutions currently exist.

3) Research:

Data collected by all research groups in the network are used for a review by the Methodological Support Office in cooperation with the working group "data collection across research networks". Another project is the "goal-oriented outcome measurement" using data from all participating research projects.
